So this week we have Benji Brand surfing an incredible Barrel at Skeleton Bay in Namibia.
Surfing Skeleton Bay
First of all, let’s give you some insight into the surfspot. Skeleton Bay is part of the Atlantic Ocean Coast of Namibia. Basically you can get there if you drive upwards from Capetown in South Africa. And you know what Skeleton Bay is known for? Yes, its shark infested water. And do you know when sharks usually feed? Yes, at night and dawn. If you want more tips on how to avoid making friends with sharks while surfing, then you might want to read this.
Now back to the video of the week – Benji Brand surfing Skeleton Bay all by himself. We wouldn’t dare doing it. But it seems like it was worth it. Here you can check out the entire video:
Surfing Barrel #1
At first, you will notice the stunning light coming from the sun, which makes it a really beautiful scenery for surfing. As Benji paddels and catches his first wave, he slides right into a barrel and is surfing towards the sun. After a while he has to slow down a bit, because he got ahead of the green room, but practically he stays in the same tube while the golden light of the sun reflects into the barrel. During his tube-time he encounters some white water, but he certainly surfs well enough to overcome those sections easily. It’s really interesting to see how he uses his arms to keep the balance while surfing.
Surfing Wave #2
Then about 1:30 minutes into the video, Benji gets out of the wave and far in the background you can see where the wave starts breaking. Shockingly far away! We guess it would be a 1km paddle back out into the line-up (where nobody was sitting – he was all alone).
What does Benji Brand do? He takes right the next wave that comes along and slides into the next barrel that spits him out after only a few seconds! In that wave he had to do three or four bottom turns in order not to get ahead of the barrel and push a lot once he was inside. At some point he gets wiped out, but it’s still amazing footage.
Very impressive, Mister Brand!
