Read a wetsuit thickness label before comparing suits
Those slash-separated numbers describe material thickness, not a complete verdict on warmth. Read them alongside the suit's construction, fit and intended conditions.

Choose leggings intended for water use and check the waistband, seams and ankle length through the movements you will make during a lesson.

Surf leggings should be assessed as part of an active outfit rather than chosen solely for their printed design. Confirm that the product is intended for water use and read its coverage, fabric and care information. Ordinary exercise leggings may have a similar silhouette without the same stated purpose.
Start with the maker's size chart and your current measurements. Check whether the chart describes body measurements or garment dimensions. A high waistband is not automatically a better fit; what matters is how it sits on your torso when you bend, reach and sit.
During a permitted dry fitting, sit down, lean forward and move into a comfortable squat. Notice whether the waistband rolls, slides or presses uncomfortably. If a drawcord is provided, use it as instructed rather than pulling it tight to compensate for an unsuitable size.
Check the rise as well as the waist circumference. A garment that feels secure while standing can pull downward when you bend if its proportions do not suit you. Conversely, excess material at the crotch may create folds. A different cut can be a better answer than repeatedly changing only the size.
Try the leggings with the top or swimwear you intend to use. Check that hems overlap as expected and that several seams do not stack in one uncomfortable place. If wearing them with a wetsuit, first confirm that the combination is appropriate and assess it as a whole.
At the ankles, look for excessive length or a cuff that feels restrictive. Do not assume fabric bunched at the bottom will become unobtrusive in use. Ask the retailer whether a shorter cut or another size range would suit your measurements.
If the product makes a sun-protection claim, read its labelled rating and conditions rather than assuming every legging provides an equivalent level. Follow the care directions so your purchase decision includes maintenance as well as coverage.
For a trip, plan how the leggings will be rinsed and dried between sessions. A second pair is useful only if there is a clear rotation need; it is not a substitute for a drying arrangement. Keep the successful style and measurements in your packing notes so a future replacement starts from a known fit.
