Read a wetsuit thickness label before comparing suits
Those slash-separated numbers describe material thickness, not a complete verdict on warmth. Read them alongside the suit's construction, fit and intended conditions.

Sleeve length changes coverage and the feel of a surf top. Compare the fabric, fit and stated purpose as well as the outline.

Two surf tops may differ by more than the length of their sleeves. One may be a lightweight rash vest, another a thicker garment with a different intended use. Read the material and product description before treating long and short sleeves as the only decision. A familiar T-shirt shape does not establish that a top is designed for use in the surf.
Begin with the role you want the top to fill. Is it being worn on its own during an appropriate session, or underneath another garment? Ask the school or shop about the proposed use and avoid assuming one top will suit every combination.
Try the top according to the seller's conditions and move your arms through a comfortable range. With long sleeves, check whether the cuffs stay in a sensible position without pulling through the shoulder. With short sleeves, notice where the edge meets your upper arm and whether it feels restrictive when reaching.
Look at the underarm and side seams as well as the sleeve length. A top that feels smooth while standing may fold or pull when you lean forward. Describe the exact point of discomfort rather than assuming that all long-sleeve or all short-sleeve tops behave the same way.
If sun-protection performance matters to your choice, check the particular garment's labelled rating and care instructions. Do not infer a rating merely from a dark colour or a long sleeve. Fabric, condition and the manufacturer's specified use matter, and uncovered areas remain a separate consideration.
For travel, compare the packed size and drying arrangements with your existing kit. There may be little benefit in buying several tops with almost identical roles if you cannot rinse and dry them appropriately between uses. One suitable garment and a realistic care routine can be easier to manage.
Before paying, check the hem and neckline with the rest of the intended outfit. Sleeve choice should not distract from a top that rides up or leaves uncomfortable folds. Choose the complete fit that works for the actual use, then keep the model details if you later want a second version.
