Rash vest fit for wearing under a wetsuit

Check whether an extra layer is appropriate for your wetsuit, then assess the combination for folds, pressure and restricted movement.

A rash vest that fits well by itself may behave differently under a wetsuit. Its seams, hem and sleeve edges can sit beneath closely fitted panels, creating folds you did not notice during an ordinary try-on. Before adding one, ask the wetsuit maker or a knowledgeable fitter whether the combination is appropriate for the particular suit.

Identify the reason for adding the layer. If you are trying to solve discomfort from a badly fitting wetsuit, an extra garment may not address the cause. Describe where the problem occurs and have the fit assessed rather than concealing it under another layer.

Keep the fabric smooth

When trying the approved combination, put the vest on correctly and smooth its hem before entering the wetsuit. Follow the suit's entry instructions and check whether the vest has ridden up. Avoid tugging at a trapped sleeve through the outer garment; adjust the layers carefully while you still have access.

Notice the neckline and underarm areas. Bulky joins or folded fabric there may be particularly apparent during movement. A loose surf shirt intended to be worn alone is not automatically a good underlayer, even if its size label matches your usual clothing.

Test the combination, not two separate garments

Make the movements recommended by the fitter and check that breathing and shoulder movement remain comfortable. If the outer suit was already close-fitting, do not assume there is room for any additional garment. Ask for another arrangement if the combination creates restriction.

For rental lessons, tell the school what you intend to wear underneath. It may have specific instructions about supplied equipment, fitting and hygiene. Knowing that in advance avoids buying a top that does not work with the lesson setup.

After use, separate and care for both garments according to their own labels. Do not leave them bundled together merely because they were worn as one outfit. A vest hidden inside a suit is easy to forget when organising drying space.

If the layer works well, note its model and size alongside the wetsuit details. That record is more helpful than a general rule to wear any rash vest under any suit, particularly when replacing one piece of the combination later.
